Artist's Statement
Natural disaster threatens my work. It is ingrained in everything I do. Each piece challenges the idea of a violent dichotomy—represented by the volcano and the earthquake—and attempts to build a bridge of acceptance between the two. These works are made of natural materials inspired by volcanoes and earthquakes. Each piece acts as a prayer and meditation on a lost family member or friend. We often view the world through a dichotomy—black and white, virtue and vice, pleasure and pain. We compare, judge, and discriminate between opposing objects, then carry the resulting emotional weight. It burdens us with presumption and prejudice. It prevents us from embracing different perspectives and experiences. By building a bridge of acceptance, we can communicate with the world through inclusive perspectives and emotions, such as awe and appreciation. Many fear the volcano and earthquake. If we challenge our preconceptions, however, fear begets beauty.
